In a dramatic final at the 2024 Women’s African Cup of
Nations (WAFCON), Nigeria’s Super Falcons staged an incredible second-half
comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and secure their record-extending 10th
continental title.
Morocco’s Early Dominance
The Atlas Lionesses started strong, silencing the Nigerian side with two first-half goals. Tournament top scorer Ghizlane Chebbak capitalized on a loose ball in the 13th minute, firing past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Morocco doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Mssoudy unleashed a precise left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Despite Nigeria’s efforts, including a tame attempt from
Folashade Ijamilusi, the Falcons entered halftime trailing 2-0, with the hosts
firmly in control.
Nigeria’s Resurgence
The Super Falcons returned with renewed intensity, pressing higher and moving the ball with purpose. Their persistence paid off in the 63rd minute when a handball by Moroccan defender Benzina led to a penalty, which Okoronkwo converted with composure.
Just eight minutes later, Okoronkwo turned provider,
sprinting down the right flank before cutting back for Ijamilusi to tap in the
equalizer. The momentum had shifted, and Nigeria’s relentless attack finally
broke Morocco’s resistance in the 88th minute. A perfectly delivered free kick
found Jennifer Echegini, who stabbed home the winner from close range, sealing
a historic comeback.
A Decade of Dominance
With this victory, the Super Falcons reaffirmed their status as Africa’s most successful women’s team, lifting their 10th WAFCON trophy. The win also avenged their semi-final defeat to Morocco in the previous edition, capping off a tournament filled with grit, resilience, and unforgettable drama.
This triumph not only cements Nigeria’s legacy but also sends a powerful message to the continent—the Super Falcons remain the team to beat.
