Haaland Double Stuns Brazil as Norway Reach Historic Quarter-Final

EAST RUTHERFORD — Erling Haaland scored twice in the final 11 minutes to fire Norway into their first-ever World Cup quarter-final with a breathtaking 2–1 upset over Brazil—condemning the five-time champions to their earliest exit since 1990.

In a night of high drama at MetLife Stadium, Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced a heroic performance, saving a first-half penalty from Bruno Guimaraes before Haaland delivered the knockout blows that sent the Scandinavian minnows into a last-eight showdown against either Mexico or England in Miami on July 11.

Neymar pulled a goal back from the spot deep into stoppage time, but it was scant consolation for a Brazil side that had hired Carlo Ancelotti specifically to end a 24-year World Cup drought. Instead, they suffered their sixth straight elimination at the hands of European opposition—and their first exit before the quarter-finals since 1986.

Nyland the Hero as Brazil Dominate but Fail to Break Through

Brazil started nervously and nearly fell behind inside three minutes when Patrick Berg's effort was ruled out for offside. But they soon settled, winning a penalty when Kristoffer Ajer clattered into Matheus Cunha. Referee Ismail Elfath initially waved play on, but VAR intervened—sparking fury from the Norwegian bench.

Guimaraes stepped up, but Nyland guessed correctly, diving low to his left to smother the tame spot-kick.

From there, the Newcastle goalkeeper grew into an immovable force. He got a crucial touch to Gabriel Martinelli's low drive to deny Guimaraes a tap-in, stuck out a leg to thwart Vinicius Junior after Martin Odegaard lost possession, and produced a string of saves that kept Brazil at bay.

Martinelli—rewarded for his stoppage-time winner against Japan in the previous round—was Brazil's brightest spark, but Nyland refused to be beaten.

Haaland, quiet for much of the first half, still created Norway's best chance before the break, bullying Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos before feeding Odegaard, whose shot was well saved by Alisson Becker.

Second-Half Drama and a Haaland Masterclass

Norway coach Stale Solbakken introduced Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup at half-time, but it was Brazil's substitution that nearly changed the game. Endrick, sent through by a delicious outside-of-the-foot pass from Vinicius, dinked wide with only Nyland to beat.

The 67th minute brought Neymar off the bench to deafening roars from the pro-Brazil crowd—but it was Norway who struck.

Schjelderup whipped in a cross from the left, and Haaland rose above Gabriel to power a header into the far corner. The stadium fell silent.

Brazil threw everything forward. Nyland produced an incredible fingertip save to prevent Ajer from looping the ball into his own net—and then, in the 90th minute, Haaland put the game beyond reach, hammering low into the corner from the edge of the box.

Neymar's Penalty—and Tears

In the 10th minute of stoppage time, Neymar converted a penalty after Casemiro was elbowed in the box—preceded by an ugly spat with Nyland. But it was too little, too late.

At the final whistle, Neymar collapsed to the turf in tears, his international career seemingly over. Brazil's World Cup dream, built on Ancelotti's promise, lay in ruins.

Haaland, now level with Lionel Messi on seven tournament goals, was left to sum it up: "This is just an insane day. One of the most insane days in Norwegian history."
