President lauds FCT Minister’s infrastructure drive as key road project opens
Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has applauded the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for aligning with his administration’s vision to elevate Abuja into a world-class capital city.
The President’s commendation came on Friday during the inauguration of the first phase of Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), stretching from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III, as part of activities marking his second year in office.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu described the newly completed road as a testament to what Nigeria can achieve when vision is matched with decisive action.
“This project symbolizes our collective progress and unwavering commitment to a brighter future,” Tinubu stated. “It reflects our dedication to delivering modern infrastructure that enhances the daily lives of our citizens.”
The President highlighted the road’s expected impact, noting
that it will significantly ease traffic congestion in Dape, Gwarimpa, Kado,
Karsana, Idu, and Mbora, while alleviating gridlock around Life Camp Junction
and surrounding areas.
Wike Urges Patience Amid Development Challenges
In his remarks, Wike acknowledged the inconveniences caused by ongoing construction but appealed to residents to endure the short-term disruptions for long-term gains.
“Development comes with challenges, but the benefits far outweigh the temporary discomfort,” the FCT Minister said.
He disclosed that the Federal Executive Council approved the Arterial Road N5 extension in September 2024, with construction beginning the following month. The project, awarded to Julius Berger, is being executed in two phases, with the second phase expected to be completed before the end of 2025.
Wike also expressed gratitude to communities affected by the
road’s expansion, assuring that compensation had been paid to both indigenes
and non-indigenes in line with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Discussions are
ongoing to extend the road further to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
A Strategic Infrastructure Milestone
Richard Dauda, Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), provided technical details, describing the road as a six-lane dual carriageway with additional parking lanes, effectively making it an eight-lane thoroughfare.
“This is a major inter-district road designed to connect key
areas of Abuja as outlined in the FCT Master Plan,” Dauda explained. “The
inaugurated section (Phase III) links Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III, with
future expansions planned to extend its reach.”
Tinubu’s Vision for a Global-Standard Capital
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Abuja into a city that rivals the world’s leading capitals. He thanked Wike, the FCT administration, and residents for their cooperation in achieving this milestone.
“I congratulate the FCT team for embracing our vision and working tirelessly to make Abuja a beacon of progress,” he said.
With this latest infrastructure achievement, the Tinubu
administration continues to push forward its agenda of urban renewal and
sustainable development, positioning Abuja as a model city for Africa.
