In a strategic pivot to diversify its international partnerships, Zimbabwe is formally campaigning for membership in the BRICS coalition. The move, led by Foreign Minister Amon Murwira under President Mnangagwa's directive, aims to integrate the country into alternative economic and diplomatic networks.
“Joining blocs such as BRICS is very important for us in expanding our economic involvement,” Murwira told The Herald, framing membership as key to Zimbabwe's global integration. The application is part of a broader strategy that also includes a bid to join the BRICS-backed New Development Bank.
Zimbabwe’s bid has found a vocal supporter in Russia, a founding BRICS member. Russian Ambassador Nikolay Krasilnikov confirmed Moscow's strong backing, noting that while admission requires consensus, Russia welcomes Zimbabwe's integration. This endorsement highlights the geopolitical dimensions of BRICS expansion, which has recently grown to ten full members and established a tier for "partner countries."
