Co-hosts Mexico kicked off the 2026 World Cup against South Africa in Mexico City's iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday, and it took just nine minutes for the tournament's first goal to arrive.
Julián Quiñones, the 29-year-old forward, struck early to send the 80,000-strong home crowd into raptures. His powerful shot slipped between the legs of South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, giving Mexico a dream start to their campaign.
The goal marked the earliest first strike at a World Cup since 2006, when Germany's Philipp Lahm netted against Costa Rica after just six minutes.

South Africa have responded by exchanging short passes in an attempt to unlock Mexico's defence and hit swiftly on the break, but the co-hosts have largely dominated proceedings in the opening stages.
