Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim after just seven months in charge, the club confirmed on Monday. The Portuguese manager’s final match was a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, leaving the club sixth in the Premier League, three points off the top four.
In a statement, the club said the decision was made "reluctantly" to provide the "best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish." Former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take over as interim manager, with his first match away at Burnley on Wednesday.
Amorim’s departure follows a tumultuous tenure. The 39-year-old was appointed in November 2024 on an 18-month contract after leaving Sporting Lisbon. His reign included a disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish last season and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
His post-match comments on Sunday hinted at internal friction, as he asserted his desire to be "the manager of this team, not just the coach" and seemed to challenge the club’s hierarchy.
